"The idea that there's any force outside you that might be guiding you, that there are any forces outside interacting with you in the environment, that there's a form of intelligence that might be a better guide than you for your future growth, any kind of intuition, stuff like that, gets immediately shouted down by the citadel, which in itself is super interesting.".
I actually listened to a quote by Alan Watts this morning where he made the point that we are born "out of" our environment and not "into" our environment.
I hadn't really considered this concept before.
It's s a handy way of understanding the difference between the natural forces which guide us (which we ultimately feel in ways we cannot explain i.e through curiosity) and the "sovereignty of intellect" as you put it which can be a drag on our progress or path towards things that fulfil us.
Thanks so much- as Jim would be the first to say, it's not either ego or attractor, but both. As the word attractor itself points to, even if we don't have a cultural conception of it. “There is a force in the universe — a tropism or attractor — that biases no-longer random interactions toward forming complex entities — entities that are whole, and are coherent enough to maintain themselves and evolve to higher levels of coherence and complexity.”

Jim is such a high quality human, and incredibly forward thinking and innovative. Very cool to find him on my timeline here!
He’s the best. Just hope he inspires more people.
Great interview Tom.

Great interview! What happened to Infinite Books? It's nowhere to be found on OSV's website anymore...
